King Shaka International Airport is the main airport in South Africa serving the whole region. It was opened in 2010 replacing Durban International Airport. The airport was named after a king of the Zulu nation who ruled in the early 19th century. The airport complex consists not only of a passenger and cargo terminals but also has a trade area, hotel rooms, an agricultural product export zone, facilities serving the airport infrastructure, and offices. DUR has one runway suitable for all heavy aircraft. The airport handles over 6 million people a year, most of whom travel around South Africa.

The airport borders on several large highways: M43, P102, H2. The routes from DUR to the city of Durban lie through La Mercy, a city nearest to the airport. Public buses and taxis stay in the special area near the exit from the international flight arrivals lounge. There are transfers to the place where buses stop and back. The airport is connected to a train station through highway P102.

It’s possible to rent a car at the airport. The following car rental dealers are present there: Avis Rent a Car, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty Car Rental, Sixt, First Car Rental, Woodford Car Hire, Bidvest Car Rental, Dollar Car Rental, Tempest Car Hire, Capital Car Hire, Select Car and Van Rental. The vehicles are taken on a special open-air parking lot near the terminal and returned to it as well. Rental in the region has a convenient feature: it’s possible to return the car not only to rental offices in the city but all over the country (where there are rental offices).

Long-term and short-term parking, hotels nearby

The airport parking complex has 6,500 parking spaces on a short-term (a garage near the terminal) and long-term (a parking lot with sheds) parking lots. There are Execupark, a separate valet parking area, and parking lots for the airport staff and cargo vehicles in front of the terminal. All parking lots are within walking distance from the terminal.

Several hotels are situated near the airport: Shapes of Africa, Westbrook Cabanas, Westbrook Place, Venty Del Est, Westbrook Beach Club, Airport Beach Backpackers.
