Airport location, terminals and transportation
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (that is also known as Schiphol Airport) is a main international airport in the Netherlands. The airport is located 19 km from Amsterdam. The airport is the third European airport in passenger traffic. It annually services 72 million people. The air hub was founded as a military airfield in 1916. After the First World War, the air base started to serve as a civil airport. Then, the airport stopped being used for military purposes. In the period of the Second World War, the airport suffered from the German occupation, was bombed and destroyed. In 1949, the restored airport took the leading position among airports in the Netherlands.
The passenger terminal is divided into three concourses. Schiphol Airport has six air-strips, five of which can accommodate heavy and large airplanes.
In “Schiphol Plaza” at the airport, there is the railway station where you can catch a train to Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, and the Hague. There are a lot of international railway routes. Schiphol has international and long haul bus connection. The bus station is located in front of the passenger terminal. The taxi rank is located at the exit from the terminal.
Rental offices, how to find them, where to return car
There are the following car rental companies at the airport: Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Budget, Avis, Enterprise. Companies’ stands are located in the passenger terminal, in the main hall of the airport «Schiphol Plaza». To find car rental points, you need to go out of the arrival concourse and follow the «Car rental» signs. The stands are located at the exit from the passenger terminal. Car rental points are open from 6 am to 11 pm. If the time of your arrival does not match the working hours of the chosen company, you should book a car and learn the details in advance.
Passengers can book any transport via an online service or conclude the contract and choose the car upon your arrival at the airport. If you book a car in advance, you have a wider choice of vehicles.
After concluding the contract at the desk, the company workers will show you where to take a car. Cars are returned to the parking lot P4. When reaching this parking lot, you need to follow the “Car rental’ signs.
Long-term and short-term parking, hotels nearby
The parking complex at the airport consists of several parking lots: a valet parking lot (in the garage P6, at entrances 2 and 3 to the terminal), a covered premium lot, a short-term lot (up to 48 hours) in the garage P1, a long-term covered and non-covered parking lot P3, a long-term lot P4. Long-term parking lots are served by a transfer. Other lots are located within walking distance from the airport. The loading/unloading of passengers is only permitted in the short-term parking lot.
There is the Hilton Amsterdam Airport hotel in the territory of the airport. The hotel is linked with the passenger terminal by a crossing. There are two hotels in the passenger terminal: Mercure and Yotelair.
