13. If the blood alcohol level is between 1.0 and 1.5‰, then the amount of the fine will be increased and will range from 2,000 to 5,000 kuna. If the blood alcohol level is more than 1.5‰, then the amount of the fine will be from 5,000 to 15,000 kuna. In the latter case the driver is also likely to be imprisoned for up to two months.
14. In the period from the last Sunday of October to the last Sunday of March, you must always drive with lower beams turned on, regardless of time. During the rest of year the lower beams must be turned on in bad weather conditions and when driving through a tunnel. The fine for the violation of the rules estimates 300 kuna.
15. Children can be transported in a vehicle only in a special seat that fully corresponds to the weight and height of the child. Do not forget that if you plan to transport children under 2 years old, the child seat should be set with its back forward. While driving, the driver and all the passengers in the vehicle must fasten seat belts.

Hints on Car Hire in Kroatia

When choosing a car for your Kroatia trip, don’t forget to check and compare the franchise amount (indicated in the rental conditions) for all cars considered in your selection. The franchise may vary from 200 to 2000 euro/dollars even for cars of the same class. A thorough comparison will allow you to choose the option with the lowest franchise.

During your booking, we will offer you to take a full coverage of the franchise ('No Risk' or 'No Excess' package). If you book a car without full coverage, it is recommended to take it at the pick-up time - this will substantially reduce your financial liability in Kroatia for the whole rental period.

During your car pick-up in Kroatia, do not forget to check what to do in breakdown-, accident- or theft-cases. Most of our offers include 'Breakdown Assistance' package. Besides this, every rental office would be happy to assist you with this package.

Prior to the car return, please check your voucher for the fuel conditions. If it is indicated that a driver shall return the car with a full tank, do not forget to refuel it on the way back, this will save you from additional charges at the rental office.

If you are looking for a car hire in Kroatia, we advise you to check OrangeSmile.com actual rental offers. Just use the orange search form at the top. We guarantee that you would not be able to find better rates anywhere else!
16. It is possible to talk on a cell phone while driving only if it is equipped with a special headset or a “hands free” system. The fine for violating this rule is 500 kuna.
17. If you have received a fine bill, then it should be paid within eight days. The fine can be paid not only in bank, but also at any post office. If you have committed a serious violation (such as driving under the influence), then your driving license may be suspended for the period of up to eight days.
18. Petrol stations usually sell diesel fuel and unleaded petrol (95 and 98). Drivers should also not forget that in Croatia it is prohibited to transport petrol in cans. Gas filling stations are usually located in big cities and near highways.
19. The majority of petrol stations are open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. In summer, some petrol stations may work until 22:00. 24/7 petrol stations can be usually found next to main highways, as well as in the center of large cities. The cost of fuel is usually high. You will have to pay approximately 10 kuna for one liter of 95-octane petrol.
20. In case of a breakdown you can always call road services by dialing 987, and in case of an accident do not forget to call the police (their short phone number is 92). To call the emergency, you need to use the phone number 94.
21. Drivers are recommended to have a warning triangle, a reflective vest, a first aid kit, and a set of spare bulbs in the car.
22. During the period from the beginning of November to the beginning of April only cars, equipped with snow chains, are allowed to move on roads of some regions of the country. Lika and Gorski kotar are among these regions. In winter roads in these regions are always covered with snow and are always quite slippery.
23. Drivers should also take into account that the use of studded tires is prohibited in Croatia. According to local regulations, drivers also cannot tint windshields and front side windows. The penalty for this violation is 700 kuna.
