Cavtat is the southernmost and one of the most attractive towns in Croatia. Its history goes back more than two thousand years. This picturesque town has seen many famous historical events that were embodied in its incomparable architectural monuments. Much of the historical and architectural sites that can be seen today were constructed after the 15th century.
One of the attractions of the old town is a stone stairway; it passes through almost all of its territory and leads to the mountains. Many centuries ago, Forum of Augustus and the Temple of Asclepius were located on the hill. Today, on the site of prehistoric monuments the Racic family Mausoleum can be seen. Next to it there is the picturesque Chapel of St. Rock.
Among the other attractions the Prince’s Palace is notable; it is located on the waterfront and is a must-see landmark. The beautiful palace was turned into a museum; its collection is very interesting and diverse. Among its exhibits there are ancient coins and collectable weapons, objects of art and lots of ancient books.
Fans of educational excursions will be interested in visiting the Monastery of Our Lady of the Snows that also houses an interesting collection of exhibits, including paintings of world famous painter Vlaho Bukovac. The artist has born and spent most of his life in Cavtat; his house is also considered a local landmark.
