A magnificent African country with its rich traditions and culture, numerous historic and natural landmarks, Ghana has become a popular tourist destination relatively not long ago. Nowadays, modern tourists come to this country to visit colorful markets where they can purchase jewelry with precious stones and attend interesting historic landmarks of different epochs. First settlements in the territory of modern Ghana appeared yet during the Bronze Age. Until the first Europeans stepped on this land, this region belonged to different tribes. There were several city-states here yet in the 13th century. Colonists from Portugal paid their attention to this land at the end of the 15th century – rich gold mines attracted them.
Europeans called the coast of modern Ghana the Gold Coast. For many years, gold mines attracted colonizers from Sweden, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Prussia. Closer to the mid-16th century, the United Kingdom managed to get rid of all competitors and claim ownership of the fertile lands of Ghana despite protests of indigenous people. Ghana became a colony of the United Kingdom. The country managed to restore independence only in March 1957.
