A real city attraction is the Kauppatori Market. It occupies historic barns, which were built at the turn of the 18th-19th centuries. Today, local merchants and craftsmen manage and dispose the old structures. At the market, you can buy literally everything, ranging from fresh seafood and seasonal vegetables to unique handicrafts. Also, the market building houses several craft workshops where everyone can look at the best craftsmen in town at work and choose their most interesting souvenirs.
Pine wood crafts are especially popular among tourists - local artisans use it to make dishes and beautiful baskets. There are also traditional souvenir shops at the market. It is also worth noting some great restaurants and cafes specializing in regional cuisine operate in the market hall. Next to the city's main market, its visitors can see a statue of the Market Square Policeman whose miniature figurines are among the most sought-after souvenirs.
The world's northernmost department store Stockmann opened on one of Oulu's central streets in 2001. Dozens of stores of various profiles are presented on its three floors. Customers will find several shops selling affordable casual clothes, large cosmetics and perfume stores, as well as pick some new accessories in jewelry stores.
