Driving in Denmark – Recommendations, Tips and Tricks

Previous tips
18. There are parking places at the side of some roads. On weekdays between 9:00 and 17:00 it is possible to leave cars at such parking lots for up to one hour. On Saturday, the same restriction is valid from 9:00 to 13:00, and on Sundays there are no restrictions. In order to use the street parking, you also need to use a parking disc.
19. All paid parking lots can be divided into three types - red (the most expensive), green and blue (the blue ones are usually located in suburban areas and are the cheapest). As a rule, on Sundays it is possible to use green and blue car parks for free.
20. Many parking lots also sell diesel fuel and unleaded gasoline (95 and 98). Gas refills are rare, so it is better to specify their location in advance. In Denmark, it is allowed to carry petrol in cans (up to 10 liters).
21. Many petrol stations have a self-service system of use. Large petrol stations are often combined with technical centers, but all extra services must be paid separately.
22. The vehicle must be equipped with a warning triangle. Drivers are also recommended to keep first aid kit and fire extinguisher in the car. The presence of such a thing as a reflective vest will also be very useful, because it is not permitted to leave a car at night without such a vest even in an emergency case.

Hints on Car Hire in Denmark

When choosing a car for your Denmark trip, don’t forget to check and compare the franchise amount (indicated in the rental conditions) for all cars considered in your selection. The franchise may vary from 200 to 2000 euro/dollars even for cars of the same class. A thorough comparison will allow you to choose the option with the lowest franchise.

During your booking, we will offer you to take a full coverage of the franchise ('No Risk' or 'No Excess' package). If you book a car without full coverage, it is recommended to take it at the pick-up time - this will substantially reduce your financial liability in Denmark for the whole rental period.

During your car pick-up in Denmark, do not forget to check what to do in breakdown-, accident- or theft-cases. Most of our offers include 'Breakdown Assistance' package. Besides this, every rental office would be happy to assist you with this package.

Prior to the car return, please check your voucher for the fuel conditions. If it is indicated that a driver shall return the car with a full tank, do not forget to refuel it on the way back, this will save you from additional charges at the rental office.

23. According to local regulations, it is not mandatory to use winter tires. Studded tires can be used only in the period starting from early November to mid-April. It is also worth noting that these tires must be installed on all wheels.
24. It is not permitted to use and transport radar detectors in the car. This violation will result in an impressive fine and the immediate confiscation of the device. The fine will be issued regardless of the fact whether the device was used or not.
25. On the roads of Denmark, much attention is paid to speed limit control. The amount of the fine for this type of violation can be up to 455 euro. There are numerous cameras and radars on the roads of the country, so the probability that any traffic violation will remain unnoticed is next to nothing.
26. Local drivers are very attentive to pedestrians. When you reach a pedestrian crossing, you definitely need to stop and wait until the road is free. The fine for passing a red light is usually from 135 to 200 euro.
27. Local drivers are well aware of the traffic regulations, and the majority of them follow the rules all the time. However, at the same time local drivers are not distinguished by friendly approach to other drivers. If a foreign driver, who is not yet accustomed to the local traffic regulations, makes a mistake, he shouldn’t expect understanding on the part of local drivers.
28. Large traffic jams have become a real problem in big cities. Of course, Copenhagen is the leader in the number of traffic jams. The majority of traffic congestions occur in the morning and in the evening, before and after the working day respectively.
29. The capital also has the highest prices for parking. The daily use of local parking lots can make a significant gap in the budget of foreign guests. If you want to save on parking, we recommend contacting Parkering København (this organization is located close to the Royal Palace) and buying a special card that entitles you to a discount at local parking lots.
30. The process of paying for parking in Denmark is standard. Almost all parking lots are equipped with special machines that accept payments. You need to park your car on a free parking space, go to the machine, dial the number of your parking space, and then insert the money. The machine prints the ticket with the indicated end time of parking. This ticket must be placed in a prominent place on the front window.
31. Note that the permitted time of parking is controlled and you cannot exceed the end time indicated in your ticket. If you do not need to pick up the car or want to extend the parking time, it is necessary to go back to the parking lot and make one more payment. The fine for overdue parking ranges from 200 to 300 euro.
32. It is important to note that there are special parking places for the disabled and drivers of electric cars. Other drivers are not permitted to occupy those parking places. Such parking spaces are always marked with appropriate signs, and spaces for electric cars are even equipped with special charging sockets.
33. If near the enter to the parking lot you see the «10-18 2timer» sign, then it is permitted to leave the car at this parking lot for free, but no longer than for two hours. The rule is valid from 10:00 to 18:00. Do not forget that in order to use such parking lots, you will need a parking disc.
34. In order to avoid trouble and misunderstanding on the part of other drivers, it is strongly advised accompany all your maneuvers with appropriate light signals. According to the local regulations, it is necessary to turn on the turn signal even when you simply want to change a lane.
