Driving in Czechia – Recommendations, Tips and Tricks

Previous tips
13. When choosing a place to park, you should always be very careful. This is particularly true about situations when you need to park your car in the city center or in the historic district. In central districts, the implementation of parking rules is closely monitored. If your car is parked improperly, it will be most likely sent to the penalty parking.
14. It will cost you from 500 to 1,000 koruny to unlock the wheels of the improperly parked car. The towing services also cost approximately 1,000 koruny. In order to clarify the penalty parking your car has been brought to, call 158. In addition to towing services, the violator will have to pay a large fine.
15. If the parking lot has a blue marking, then it is possible to use it only if you have a special blue card. This card can be purchased at any newsstand; sometimes, it is allowed to park a vehicle without the card during the period from 6:00 to 8:00. If the parking lot has such a rule, there will be the sign, specifying that.
16. If the road has yellow markings along its side, then it is strictly prohibited to park the car there. Parking lots with white markings are free for everyone, but you can leave the car for no more than two hours at such a parking lot (the time limit is usually indicated on a special sign).

Hints on Car Hire in Czechia

When choosing a car for your Czechia trip, don’t forget to check and compare the franchise amount (indicated in the rental conditions) for all cars considered in your selection. The franchise may vary from 200 to 2000 euro/dollars even for cars of the same class. A thorough comparison will allow you to choose the option with the lowest franchise.

During your booking, we will offer you to take a full coverage of the franchise ('No Risk' or 'No Excess' package). If you book a car without full coverage, it is recommended to take it at the pick-up time - this will substantially reduce your financial liability in Czechia for the whole rental period.

During your car pick-up in Czechia, do not forget to check what to do in breakdown-, accident- or theft-cases. Most of our offers include 'Breakdown Assistance' package. Besides this, every rental office would be happy to assist you with this package.

Prior to the car return, please check your voucher for the fuel conditions. If it is indicated that a driver shall return the car with a full tank, do not forget to refuel it on the way back, this will save you from additional charges at the rental office.

17. There are also parking lots with orange and green markings. At these parking lots, you can leave the car for 4 - 6 hours, depending on the particular type of parking. Virtually all parking lots are equipped with automated parking machines that accept payments for the service. You need to pay using the machine, get the ticket and place it in a prominent place on the windshield.
18. The majority of parking machines accept only 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 korun coins. Some parking machines can accept 1, 2 and 5 euro coins. It is very important to take the car from the parking lot in time, because violators will have to pay the CZK 500 fine.
19. There are specially designated parking spaces for the disabled, and other drivers are strictly prohibited from occupying them. If you break this rule, your car will be sent to a penalty parking within several minutes, and you will have to pay a fine of 5,000 koruny.
20. If you want to park your car for a longer period, you should look for parking lots located away from the city center. The cost of services at such parking lots is approximately 40 koruny per hour, but many parking lots of this type have no parking limit.
21. In the Czech Republic, petrol stations are true service areas as almost all petrol stations have a small shop or a cafe. If the petrol station is located near a highway, it is likely to have a free toilet and a shower. Finally, at every petrol station you can pump up the tires, wash the plate number and the windshield. These services are free of charge.
22. At absolutely all petrol stations the payment is done after the car tank has been filled. Despite the fact that almost all petrol stations accept non-cash payments, it is still recommended to stock up on paper money and coins of small denomination.
23. In central parts of settlements, sound signals can be used only in case of a serious danger. In winter, sound signals are prohibited from 9 am to 5 pm, and in summer - from 8 am to 6 pm.
24. Public transport has a number of privileges on the roads of the Czech Republic. You should not overtake buses and trams without any particular need, and occupy special lanes for public transport. If there is a traffic jam, drivers are required to keep one lane free for special vehicles (police cars, fire service and ambulance).
25. In the Czech Republic, roundabouts are considered the main road. If you want to leave the circle, you must use the turning signal to notify other drivers.
