There are no written records about the early history of the country, but archaeological excavations proved that first settlers on the territory of modern Brunei appeared during the prehistoric era. It is only known that there was a large feudal country on the site of modern Brunei in the 16th century. This country controlled almost a complete territory of Borneo Island. Famous Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan was the discoverer of this land. His crew stepped onto the territory of Brunei in 1522.

The country returned its independence only in 1959, after the adoption of the new constitution.

Bandar Seri Begawan is often referred to as one of the richest cities in the world. Tourists can admire not only beautiful historical buildings but also eye-catching modern constructions here. Hundreds of shops and restaurants work in the capital. This is also the location of the most prestigious hotels. Simply walk a bit away from the lively streets of the capital, and you will find yourself in a completely different place – a hilly area with dense forests.
The Istana Nurul Iman Palace is a very unusual and interesting architectural landmark. This is the biggest active residence of the government in the world. The giant palace has 1788 rooms. Even the number of bathrooms is astonishing – 257. The building cost of the tremendous residence exceeded US$1 billion. A beautiful park surrounds the Istana Nurul Iman. It is also impossible not to mention one more part of the residence, a car garage with more than 5,000 vehicles. The luxurious palace is open to all visitors for several days a year.
There are several beautiful mosques in Brunei, and the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is the most famous. The main Islamic symbol of the country was built in 1958. The height of the gilt cupola of the mosque is 52 meters. The garden with manmade lagoons, which surrounds the mosque, is a no less interesting place to visit. It is particularly interesting to visit this religious landmark in the evening when skillful illumination lights up the territory.

An airplane flight from Thailand is the simplest and most affordable way to reach Brunei. The international airport in Bandar Seri Begawan accepts flights from Bangkok. Some western cities in Malaysia also have air links with the country, but these flights are not so regular. The Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah have frequent buses and ferries to Brunei.
