The city of Tel Aviv wants to attract more tourists, and so the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality decided to make a master plan that would identify the main steps for taking the entire tourism industry to another level. This plan covers such themes as working with target audiences, promoting tourist attractions, opening new tourist complexes, and other steps that may be helpful in developing the tourism industry in the region.
Not only hotels in Tel Aviv-Yafo but also local businesses and communities will benefit from the increased number of guests. The final aim of the local municipality is to make Tel Aviv-Yafo one of the most popular urban tourist destinations. Last year was beneficial in terms of tourism development because the city hosted the Eurovision Song Contest. This was the largest international event that Tel Aviv has ever hosted in its history of 110 years. 2019 was a good year not only for hotels in Tel Aviv but also for other destinations in the country. Israel welcomed as many as 4.9 million guests, reaching an increase of 12% vs. 2018.
As the number of guests is increasing, a shortage of hotels in Tel Aviv has emerged in recent years. Nowadays, the hotel supply in the capital is increasing at a high pace, forming a true hotel boom. For example, 783 new hotels with a total of 11,170 rooms were added in Tel Aviv in 2019.
Tel Aviv is also turning into a major transport hub for international tourists. Last year, the Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport served 24 million passengers. This is 1.6 million passengers more than in 2018. Such growth was possible because of the launch of new direct flights to the city. Currently, 140 airlines have flights to Tel Aviv, connecting the capital of Israel with 180 destinations in 56 countries. At the moment, such countries as the United States, Turkey, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, Greece, the UK, Ukraine, and Spain are the main source countries that account for more than half of all passengers.
To ensure the continuous development of the city’s tourism, Tel Aviv plans to focus on the three main “pillars”. First of all, Old Jaffa, the historic part of the city, is an interesting destination for fans of sightseeing. Business guests and everyone interested in shopping and entertainment will like Tel Aviv, the vibrant and multifaceted new city. The last but not the least, Tel Aviv is an excellent beachside destination, so the municipality plans to develop beach infrastructure in the city.
