European Hotel Pipeline is Reaching Record High Levels

News It is not a secret that Europe is an internationally popular destination, and it looks like hoteliers think that the market still has much potential for growth. This is the most obvious explanation for a very interesting fact – the number of hotels in Europe is growing fast, and the pipeline of hotels under construction is about to set a new record. As Lodging Econometrics mentions in their report, the hotel construction pipeline in Europe in the second quarter of 2019 has reached 1,704 properties with a total of 260,111 rooms. This is 23% more (19% more if count by the number of rooms) than during the same period of 2018.

As many as 819 new hotels (128,284 new rooms) are already being built at the moment. Within a year from now, 496 more hotels with 76,633 rooms will enter the building stage. Another 398 hotels are at the planning stage at the moment. These are nearly all-time high or already all-time high numbers. Experts name low-interest rates and favorable lending terms among the main reasons for such an increase in the number of new hotels in Europe. Economic uncertainty makes investors more interested in hotels projects in popular destinations.

The number of new hotel announcements in Europe made over the last four quarters is also record high – 855 projects with a total of 119,472 rooms. The pipeline growth is expected to continue in 2020. During January – June 2019, 213 new hotels opened in Europe. They added 28,167 rooms to the region’s hotel supply. By the end of the year, we might see openings of 192 more hotels (24,689 rooms).

Next year, the number of hotels set for opening is even bigger – 432 properties with 60,694 rooms in total and 484 new hotels (74,220 rooms) will appear in Europe in 2021. What destinations did attract investors the most? Nothing new here – hotels in London are the doubtless leaders with soaring 78 hotels (13,632 rooms) under construction. Paris hotels are the second most popular choice (54 projects and 7,946 rooms). Hotels in Dusseldorf are almost on par with the City of Lights with 52 hotels (10,178 rooms). Hotels in Lisbon and Hamburg are the fourth and fifth most popular destinations with 39 and 32 projects in pipeline respectively.

On the country level, Germany has the biggest hotel construction pipeline in Europe with the record number of projects – 320 hotels with 57,698 rooms. The United Kingdom is second with 280 projects (40,970 rooms), followed by France, Portugal, and Poland.
