Travelers from China and Brazil are the Most Interested in Visiting Europe This Summer

News Travel sentiment towards Europe remains strong despite all potential troubles, as the European Travel Commission (ETC) and the European Tourism Association (ETOA) state in their latest Long-Haul Travel Barometer. Guests from China and Brazil have the strongest intention to visit the region this summer. Their result is four points higher than a year ago. This report covers the intent of people from China, Japan, Brazil, Russia, and the US to travel to Europe between May to August 2019.

Over half of respondents from China (54%) say they plan to make a vacation to a European destination this summer. Such a high number of guests willing to visit the continent is a result of the 2018 EU-China Tourism Year that included various promotional activities, as well as the visa relaxation policy in some countries and improved air connectivity. Almost three-fourths of Chinese respondents (70%) also report that want to spend between 7 and 14 nights in Europe.

Tourists from this country also prefer to combine destinations and visit an average of 4 different destinations during one vacation. Hotels in Paris and Berlin are still very attractive for Chinese guests as France and Germany are the #1 and #2 most popular choices. However, there are some new countries in the list of the most popular choices, such as Croatia, Monaco, Italy, San Marino, Hungary, Romania, and Serbia.

In Brazil, 2 in 5 respondents (39%) say they want to visit Europe this summer. They mostly name local food, sightseeing, and natural beauty as the key factors that make Europe an attractive destination. Portugal and France are the most popular choices. Such optimism regarding traveling abroad may be the result of the new government and monetary policy, but it is not clearly known whether these plans translate into actual traveling in case of negative economic trends.

In Russia, sentiment towards Europe is high, but inflation, the rouble exchange rate, and a hike in value-added taxes make guests from this country visit Europe less often. Germany is the most sought after destination for Russians. Only 27% of respondents from the States plan to visit Europe this summer. The overall sentiment index fell down from 103 index points in 2018 to 98 in 2019. The last but not the least, Japanese travelers feature negative demand for traveling to Europe due to a slowdown of Japan’s economy. Just 18% of respondents from this country plan to visit Europe this summer.
