This year InterContinental Hotels & Resorts hits its 70th birthday. To celebrate the anniversary, the famous hotel brand made collaboration with futurist Faith Popcorn about the future of hotel industry. How hotels, guest experience and services offered will look like the next 70 years?
According to Popcorn, virtual reality will be one of most popular and widely used innovations in hospitality. She believes that simulated adventures in real-time will become very popular. People will also be able to share their adventures with friends and family members in different parts of the world. People will spend time together in virtual reality, enjoying a walk in famous destinations or a swim in an ocean.
Hotel guests will be able to enjoy customized wardrobes with items provided by fashion brands. Guests just need to pick the design they like and get clothes ready in 3D printer. These in-room wardrobes will offer apparel and accessories tailored to size and likes of guests, as well as local weather and style.
Popcorn believes that luxury hotels will become accessible to most travelers and so guests will seek new experiences. To fit that need, hotels will offer “fantasy escapes” completely artificial environment that can look like a fantastic world or a game-like thrilling experience with dangerous situations that will make guests’ adrenaline level skyrocket without leaving a hotel room.
Growing population will make hotels more concerned about space. By 2086, large hotel guestrooms might become true luxury. Hotels will keep growing not only “up” by building more floors, but also “down” by adding more underground levels. Guestrooms will become more tailored to likes and style preferences of guests. Large holographic walls will make interior design fully customizable. Most likely, hotels will not feature one style in future. Instead, different floors or wings will feature different cultures, from tropical island beaches to alpine ski slopes.
InterContinental also presented its latest development that unleashed striving for future and new philosophy of the brand. The Songjiang Quarry Hotel in China will be a truly magnificent building. The hotel will be built in a 90m deep quarry near Shanghai. The fantastic resort will offer underwater bedrooms, extreme sports, cascading waterfalls and cutting edge facilities. The Songjiang Quarry will be one of the greenest hotels in the world as it will be powered by solar and geothermal energy.
