John Portman & Associates have presented to public a wonderful hotel complex that is, actually, a redeveloped fair site. Their Expo Hotel Complex in Shanghai is a large multi-purpose complex located on the area of 300,000 sq. m.
The developers of the complex say it has a fresh feeling and a modern urban look, so it will perfectly fit the city. The complex includes a large hotel with 1,200 guestrooms. Actually, this is a cluster of 4 hotels connected by a system of elevators and artificial platforms. The complex, which consists of two large buildings, will feature a garden in the sky. The garden will be a public place, and will feature shops, restaurants and other leisure facilities. Despite the system of connectors, all the hotels will have their unique design and distinguishing details.
It is also reported that nature will become one of the most important design components of the complex. Nature has a unique power to make the environment look warmer and more people-friendly. Such a dedication to nature will be reflected not only in the large use of flowers and trees, but also in environment-friendly waste management, lightning management, and selection of materials.
The new complex is conveniently located between the existing convention and Expo center. Because this part of the city is very lively and widely visited by both locals and tourists, the ground level of the complex contains plazas, interconnected promenades, gardens, and other public spaces.
