The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has revealed interesting information about the hotels in Ho Chi Minh, one of the main cities of Vietnam. The number of hotels doubled just within 3 years, reaching 73 properties with the total of 9,700 guestrooms.
The main growth took place in the category of budget accommodations. The number of 3-star hotels rose from 21 to 47. The increase of 4- and 5-star accommodations is not so impressive – from 8 to 13 and from 11 to 13 hotels respectively. However, as Ho Chi Minh becomes popular among foreign travellers, more upscale properties are expected to open already this year. Among them are the 5-star 335-key Nikko Sai Go Hotel located in District one, which may start operating this October; and 5-star Grand Hotel that will be opened after renovation and will have 500 guestrooms.
In 2010 the total increase of international tourists estimated 15%, so the demand for rooms in 4-star and 5-start hotels was really “huge” according to Tran Hung Viet, the general director of Saigontourist Holding Company. The demand made some hoteliers start expanding their properties in rush.
In 2012 two new hotels will be opened in the central part of the city. These will be Pullman hotel in Sai Gon Centre (5 stars, 300 guestrooms), and Novotel Sai Gon Centre (4 stars, 250 guestrooms).
