Advices for Car Trips through Philippines

Previous tips
18. If in residential areas drivers can choose any lane, in the country drivers are advised to keep as close to the extreme right as possible. The extreme left row can be used for overtaking purposes only. Once the maneuver is complete, it is necessary to drive back to the right lane.
19. We should also mention active use of sound signals. Local motorists can honk literally for any occasion. Drivers from other countries should also not forget to honk as in this country honking is considered the most effective (if not the only) way to communicate with other drivers.

Renting a Car in Philippines - Recommendations

If you need a car with an automatic transmission, it is recommended to book it in advance. Cars with automatic transmissions are often sparse in Philippines, so the rental confirmation may take a longer period.

When selecting a specific model for traveling throughout Philippines, we recommend to take into consideration some practical apects. If you are going to drive mostly in the cities, then a car of a small size is preferable, while for long distance trips (and trips in the mountains) we recommend to choose a larger and more powerful car.

Prior your car retrun, please clean the salon from a garbage, and do not forget to take away all your belongings from the passenger compartment.

At the car return time, please ask the officer to make a visual inspection of the vehicle for defects and to sign the acceptance report. Keep the invoice and the acceptance report for next few months.
20. Because of peculiar behavior of Filipinos and a huge number of cars on the road, traffic jams are simply inevitable. On the larger islands, they have become common during rush hours. Driving on roads of the capital faster than 15 km/h is simply impossible.
21. You will see a lot of fancy cars in the Philippine Islands. Not all local people have enough money to buy new cars, but no one gives up the opportunity to have their own vehicle. Local craftsmen collect cars from old parts, so new vehicles often look quite original.
22. The “jeepney” have become a real local attraction. These are small buses painted in all colors of the rainbow. They are considered the main form of public transport on the islands. Jeepney owners paint their cars themselves and try to decorate them as much as possible. Sometimes decorations cover almost the whole windshield.
23. Tricycles are not less eye-catching traffic participants. These are bicycles with a sidecar that have become a very important means of transport outside large cities. Tricycles are designed for three passengers, although outside of big cities they often carry up to seven passengers.
24. In order to make roads in major cities less loaded, there is a special rule that limits the right of entry to central areas of cities. On Mondays, in the capital and in other major cities cars with the plate number ending with 1 and 2 cannot enter the downtown. On Tuesdays, the rule applies to vehicles with numbers 3 and 4, and so on until Friday. On weekend, all cars are allowed to enter.
25. On intercity highways, motorists will notice a lot of bright billboards. Because of them it seems that you’re moving along the main street of a large city. Even remote country roads are intensively “decorated” with billboards.
26. There are small stickers with a phone number on the back of some cars. Drivers are encouraged to call that number if the owner of the car violated traffic regulations.
