Road Rules and Traffic Regulations in Iceland - Driving Nuances

1. The total length of roads in Iceland is a little less than 13,000 km, more than 5,000 km of which are paved. Absolutely all roads in the country are free. A fee will be charged only for driving in the Hualfjörður tunnel.
2. All roads are conditionally divided into following categories: primary, secondary, mountain, and country roads. When planning a route, drivers should take into consideration that mountain roads are very complicated. In winter, a significant part of mountain roads is closed. They can also be closed during other seasons because of adverse weather conditions.
3. The length of the Hualfjörður tunnel, which connects Reykjavik and Akranes is 5,770 meters. More than a half of that length, 3,750 meters, is laid under water. For ordinary cars, the toll for using the tunnel ranges from 1,000 to 1,300 kronur, and for motorcycles the fare is 200 kronur.
4. In Iceland, there are the following standard speed limits: in the territory of settlements the maximum allowed speed is 50 km/h, on country roads it is 80 km/h on gravel roads and 90 km/h on asphalt roads. Signs that notify drivers about speed limits are widespread on local roads, so drivers will not worry about the speed limit on a particular road.

Nuances of Car Rental in Iceland

To save on your rental, we advise to book your car in advance. You will save the most if you do this several weeks or even several months prior to your trip. Rental offices in Iceland usually raise rental prices over time, based on the number of cars left available for the accounting period.

When looking for an exotic car (cabriolet, minivan or limousine), we advise to check in the rental offices located at airports, as they usually provide much wider choice comparing to offices in urban areas.

Upon receipt of invoices, bills and documents for your car at the rental location, please compare the obtained data with your voucher. Quite often, employees of rental offices in Iceland try to add optional charges or services without informing customers.

It is very important to pick up your car at the rental office in Iceland in a correct way. Prior to leaving the office, carefully inspect the car for various defects, and ensure that all the discovered defects are mentioned in your rental documents. In case of a non-compliance found, place a demand for correction to the rental officer.

5. For motorists, the maximum level of blood alcohol content is 0.5 ppm. In the case of the first traffic violation, the driver will be fined 25 000 - 50 000 kronur, and in case of a repeated violation the amount of the fine will be increased to 160,000 kronur.
6. According to current traffic regulations, drivers must use low beams, regardless of time of day. The penalty for violation of this rule is 5000 kronur.
7. Children under 6 years old can be transported in a car only in a special child seat, or the vehicle must be equipped with restraint systems which fully comply with height and weight of the child. The driver and all passengers present in the vehicle must also fasten seat belts.
8. It is forbidden to talk on a cell phone while driving. If there is a great need to make calls while driving, you need to equip your cell phone with a headset. The penalty for violation of this rule is 5000 kronur.
9. Local police officers have the right to charge fees directly on the spot. If the violator cannot pay the fine on the spot, he will be issued a bill that can be later paid off at any police station or a bank.
10. Speeding may result in very heavy fines. The minimum fine for speeding is 5000 kronur, and in case of a serious violation the fine can be increased by 10 times. Also, a temporary driving ban can be used as an additional punishment for speeding.
11. Local petrol stations sell diesel fuel and unleaded gasoline (95 and 98). There are no gas refueling stations in Iceland. Motorists also should take into account that in Iceland it is forbidden to carry petrol in cans.
12. Don’t forget that petrol is rather expensive at local petrol stations. The cost of a liter of fuel is approximately 2 euro. The quality of many secondary roads leaves much to be desired, so petrol consumption is usually quite large.
13. The majority of petrol stations are self-service ones, so the payment for fuel is done through the machine. As a rule, these machines accept both cash and bank cards.
