An interesting historic landmark is Villa Ambron where the famous writer Lawrence Darrell lived. Throughout its existence, the building has never been renovated, so now it looks very dilapidated. An important sightseeing facility is the Graeco-Roman Museum housing a huge collection of antique pieces of art. Forty thousand exhibits also include ancient statuettes, elegant vases, and paintings. Fans of walking in picturesque places should think about visiting Montazah Palace Gardens. A beautiful mansion stands on one of the rocks, its construction was completed in 1914. The mansion is surrounded by a large park with a picnic area.
One of the most mysterious local attractions is the catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa. According to archaeologists, they were built in the 2nd century BC. This is a large-scale labyrinth of tombs on three levels. The catacombs feature a beautiful architecture. On the walls of the labyrinth, you can see inscriptions with words from old prayers. On the island of Pharos is Fort Qaitbay dating back to the end of the 15th century. The fort stands in the very place where the famous Alexandria lighthouse was once located. Part of the fortress halls is converted into the Naval Museum. The Royal Jewellery Museum occupies one of the beautiful historic mansions. Besides its unique jewelry that belonged to the royal dynasty, the museum also has a large collection of weapons and gem-encrusted interior decorations.
