Driving in Brazil – Recommendations, Tips and Tricks

Previous tips
21. You will see many motorcyclists on the roads of Brazil. They can safely be classified as the worst traffic violators. An interesting fact – the majority of motorcycles and mopeds are ridden by females, while men prefer cars.
22. Traffic police is quite rare in Brazil. The control over the implementation of the traffic regulations is mostly carried out by radars and cameras. By the way, cameras are installed literally everywhere, so do not expect that your traffic violations will be left unnoticed.
23. In addition to the traffic police, it is possible to meet the federal police on the roads of Brazil. If the traffic police checks cars and issues fines, the federal police has the right to check and verify documents. No matter what kind of patrol has stopped you, you must always be patient and treat police and their orders with respect.
24. There are usually many trucks on the roads of the country, and this fact slows down the traffic seriously. Often drivers of small trucks increase the speed greatly and constantly move from one lane to another, regularly driving on the opposite lane.
25. Drivers should also be particularly careful in the evening and when it rains. Not all cars move with their headlights turned on, so when the visibility is poor it is better not to overtake at all and move from one lane to another as rare as possible.

Hints on Car Hire in Brazil

When choosing a car for your Brazil trip, don’t forget to check and compare the franchise amount (indicated in the rental conditions) for all cars considered in your selection. The franchise may vary from 200 to 2000 euro/dollars even for cars of the same class. A thorough comparison will allow you to choose the option with the lowest franchise.

During your booking, we will offer you to take a full coverage of the franchise ('No Risk' or 'No Excess' package). If you book a car without full coverage, it is recommended to take it at the pick-up time - this will substantially reduce your financial liability in Brazil for the whole rental period.

During your car pick-up in Brazil, do not forget to check what to do in breakdown-, accident- or theft-cases. Most of our offers include 'Breakdown Assistance' package. Besides this, every rental office would be happy to assist you with this package.

Prior to the car return, please check your voucher for the fuel conditions. If it is indicated that a driver shall return the car with a full tank, do not forget to refuel it on the way back, this will save you from additional charges at the rental office.

26. There is an evident shortage of parking spaces in big cities. Local drivers park as skillfully as they violate the traffic rules. Do not be surprised if you see how one car parks right behind another, leaving that car absolutely blocked.
27. Fans of walking in beautiful places will be delighted with some roads as they are laid in truly picturesque areas. If you decide to stop and enjoy the splendor of nature, it is recommended not to walk too far from the car and always keep it in sight – your vehicle left on the roadside is likely to be taken by the breakdown truck.
28. Sao Paulo is one of the leaders in terms of the number of cars. According to statistics, almost a half of its residents have a private car. The traffic on the roads of this picturesque Brazilian city is always very heavy. Foreign drivers should also not forget that there are many elderly people among local drivers, and this fact also adds some peculiarities to the local car traffic.
29. At first glance, it may seem that chaos reigns on the roads of Brazil. However, driving on the roads of big cities is quite simple. Even inexperienced drivers will quickly become accustomed to local traffic.
30. There are many one-way streets in large cities, not to mention smaller ones. It is also worth considering that the majority of roads allow turning to the right only, and you will sometimes need to pass a couple of quarters to turn left.
31. All crossroads are equipped with traffic lights that control traffic in the most optimal way. Sometimes traffic lights break down, and crossroads turn into a true nightmare. If the traffic light is not working, all that is left for you is to rely on your intuition. In case of a traffic light breakdown all most dangerous crossroads are controlled by traffic policemen.
32. There are specially designated lanes for taxis and public transport on broad roads. Recently, many special lanes for motorcyclists have appeared in the country; such lanes are always marked.
33. There is a civil organization called CET. The main aim of this organization is traffic management. The organization’s staff reacts promptly to all kinds of accidents, they also help drivers find the best road in case of a road accident or road repairs.
34. An interesting fact - CET has no relation to the power structures of the country. As a rule, CET staff patrols the streets using motorcycles and pickup trucks. Thanks to their rapid and competent actions it becomes possible to avoid heavy traffic jams in large cities.
35. Both the local police and CET treat foreign drivers very favorably. Even if a foreign driver has broken the rules, he is unlikely to be fined for the first time. However, it doesn’t mean that you can forget about traffic regulations and drive as you wish – the police will easily distinguish an inexperienced driver from a regular violator.
36. In order to prevent traffic jams in “rush hours”, a very interesting system of control is used in Brazil. From 7:00 to 10:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00, only cars the number of which ends with the permitted number are allowed to use the local roads.
37. For example, on Mondays the cars, the number of which ends with numbers 1 and 2, are not allowed to use some roads. On Tuesday, the same restriction applies to cars the last figure in the number of which is 3 and 4, and so on until Friday. On Saturday and Sunday there are no restrictions.
38. The roads with the abovementioned entry system always have special signs installed nearby. Do not even hope that you can enter such a road on a forbidden day. This will be certainly noticed and you will receive a fine, the amount of which will be approximately 50 USD.
39. In Brazil, traffic violations result not only in heavy fines, but also in penalty points. When the number of points reaches the critical level, the driver’s license is cancelled. In this case, the driver will need to pass the test and obtain the new driving license.
