Six Senses to Open a Hotel in London in a Former Department Store

News While many retailers around the world suffer, hoteliers do not seem to have similar problems. One of the legendary department stores in London, Whiteleys, is closing and a hotel will open in its building. Branded by the Six Senses, the new London hotel will enjoy a prime location close to Kensington Palace and Hyde Park.

The Six Senses London will be located in Bayswater in West London. This part of the capital is famous for its white stucco houses, elegant terraces, and streets with garden squares. The hotelier couldn’t find a better location to introduce its Six Senses brand to the UK’s hotel market. The new hotel will have 110 guest rooms ranging in size and starting from 33 square meters. It will also feature a spa and wellness club. Moreover, the hotel will offer 14 branded, fully serviced residences. Owners of these residences will enjoy a full plethora of services offered by Six Senses, including housekeeping, a concierge, and access to the wellness center.

The location of the new hotel speaks for itself. Whiteleys was a famous department store named after entrepreneur William Whiteley. He opened his first shop in Westbourne Grove in 1863. Steadily, the shop grew into a large and popular department store. It was redeveloped into a shopping center with bowling and cinema in the 1980s. Unfortunately, the popularity of the venue ceased, and the store was closed in December 2018.

Nowadays, a team of designers and developers convert the building into a mixed-use project. The historic landmark has the Grade II façade that will be preserved, as well as the dome and courtyard. The same applies to the gorgeous staircase that is modeled after the staircase in the La Scala opera house. The hotel’s design will respect the classic design of the building, adding art deco details and contemporary art by British artists.

The ground floor will feature a lobby with a cozy bar and an all-day dining restaurant with tables in the courtyard and an open kitchen. This is a 1,300 square-meter-large area that is great for eating, meeting people, socializing or just enjoying the moment. The hotel’s wellness center will feature a 20-meter indoor swimming pool, a 325-meter fitness center, relaxation rooms, and an Alchemy Bar. The second floor of the club will have a social area where visitors can relax from the city stress, eat at a restaurant, try various wellness treatments or simply use coworking spaces. The hotel is set to open in 2023.
