The World Economic Forum (WEF) published its traditional annual report “Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report”. In the paper, there is a list of the most dangerous destinations for travelers and, surprisingly, there are countries that are rather popular with Europeans, such as Thailand, Jamaica, and Egypt.
The report contains the analysis of 136 countries of the world and their rating of safety for international guests. Different criteria were applied in order to make the list. According to WEF, they took into consideration potential security risks of tourists and business people and the frequency of violence acts in the country such as terrorism and other attacks that harm people.
Surprisingly for many Europeans, there is Thailand on the list. It occupies position #19 out of top 20 most dangerous countries. Within the past 13 years, more than 6,500 people died in the southern part of the country. Such provinces as Narathiwat, Yala, Songkhla, and Pattani are considered the most prone to violence. Therefore, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) recommends travelers to refrain from visiting these parts of the country. According to the company’s website, attacks in the deep south of Thailand have taken place nearly every day since 2004. Some foreigners were killed or injured during these attacks.
Colombia occupies the top spot on the list. Terrorist attacks, kidnapping, trafficking, and many violent gangs make this country a poor choice for tourists. Egypt, which was very popular with travelers from all over the world a few years ago, is now on the 7th place due to ISIS groups targeting tourist destinations. Finally, Jamaica is #18 because of criminal activity.
The full list of the most dangerous countries for travelers is the following: Columbia, Yemen, El Salvador, Pakistan, Nigeria, Venezuela, Egypt, Kenya, Honduras, Ukraine, Philippines, Lebanon, Mali, Bangladesh, Chad, Guatemala, South Africa, Jamaica, Thailand, and The Democratic Republic of Congo. WEF also notes that these destinations are particularly dangerous during the peak holiday season. Low season is slightly safer. The report may harm tourism industries of the countries mentioned above as, for example, 97% of Britons name safety the primary concern when traveling abroad. That said, Europe is also considered unsafe in June to August due to recent terrorist attacks.
