Marriott International will partner together with A Woman’s Nation (a non-profit organization founded by Maria Shriver) and will encourage hotel guests to leave tips to room attendants. Tips and thank you notes can be left in specially designed envelopes that will be provided to guests in hotel rooms.
According to the first phase of the project, Marriott will place special signature envelopes in more than 160,000 hotel guestrooms throughout the US and Canada. Not only Marriott-managed, but also Marriott franchised hotels participate in the initiative, where it’s called “The Envelope Please”.
The idea of the project was born when Maria Shriver was talking to women who took care of her room during hotel stays. Room attendants told her that they were often forgotten when it came to tipping because hotel guests simply didn’t face them, unlike front-of-house staff. Shriver thought that hard work of this employee group should be awarded as well. According to Marriott, room attendants are the biggest group of hotel staff, and it’s their “behind-the-scenes” work that keeps the hotel in order, so they decided to support the tipping initiative.
