This May Spain was visited by as many as 9.8 million international tourists, showing a progress of 7.4% comparing to previous year. Therefore, during January-May 2013 Spain was visited by extra 19.8 million people, reaching a cumulative rise of 3.9% year on year.
The UK remains the biggest source market of Spain. In May 2013, 9.3% more Brits visited Spain, making the country the biggest international tourism market in Great Britain. The British were mostly interested not in mainland Spain, but in the Balearic Islands almost one in three British tourists visited them. The raise of British tourist arrivals to the island estimated 10.8%. Germany is the second biggest source market for Spain. As many as 17.3% of all international visitors in Spain were from this country, featuring the increase of 13.2%. Finally, the third place belongs to France 14% of all international visitors were from this country.
If describing by region, Catalonia wins the leadership with 1.5 million tourists arriving in May 2013. With this achievement Catalonia posts its sixteenth consecutive month of growth. By the way, this northern Spanish region is the most popular with visitors from France. The Balearics occupy the second place with 1.4 million of international tourist arrivals (+13.2% comparing to the same period of 2012). Finally, the third and fourth places are occupied by AndalucĂa and the Canary Islands respectively. The increase in the number of tourists estimated there +5.7% and +8.5% (781,000 tourists in total for AndalucĂa and 690,000 for the Canary Islands).
The expenditures of tourists have also increased. In average, visitors spend 883 euro in total in Spain or 111 euro per day.
