A resort in Thailand named Kirimaya has announced the creation of its own organic farm that will provide clean vegetables and herbs for visitors of the hotel. The location of Kirimaya allows this – the 64-room accommodation is located near Khao Yai National Park (200 km away from Bangkok). The farm will occupy 5 acres of land (approximately 2 hectares). Especially for this purpose the hotel has already hired full-time staff that will take care of the farm. Here will be planted mostly vegetables and herbs which seed-to-harvest period estimates 45-60 days.
The building of the farm has already begun. When finished, it will consist of 160 blocks of plants. In order to provide resort with continuous supply of vegetables, each plant will be grown in four blocks. Plants of the same type will be harvested one week apart. Only organic fertilizers are used on this farm. In order to cope with weed without chemicals, the farm features a system of “drip irrigation”, which controls the moisture of soil and provides water to plants only.
The first phase of the project covers all most popular local vegetables. Among them are 12 types of lettuce, Japanese pumpkins, Chinese kale, as well as some popular herbs including lemongrass and galangal.
The farm is controlled by the resort’s chef David Bedinghaus, who mentions that organic food is highly popular around the world, but hotels usually buy organic food. Here vegetables will be as fresh as possible, so this is a truly unique project.
