Two companies, Jin Jiang Hotels and Thayer Lodging Group, have created a joint venture JT Realty Advisors. This Shanghai-based company is now going to launch its own hotel brand named Marvel. All Marvel hotels will be 3-star accommodations targeted to business clients and located primarily in China.
The first prototype of Marvel is a hotel in Shanghai and it’s already running. According to the CEO of Thayer Lodging Group Leland Pillsbury, other 2 hotels are already in the plans of the company and they hope to gain the number of hotels in portfolio quickly. Currently there are not many local hotel brands in the country, just several ones (compare to the US with 228 brands). However, around 200,000 new hotels in China are planned for opening within next 15-20 years and so, as Mr. Pillsbury states, the number of brands should be also somewhere on the American level.
The Marvel brand will be financed by the JT realty Advisors. The company plans to attract new properties mostly by leasing agreements as such business model is very efficient for rapid growth. Marvel hotels also hope to attract existing hotels to change their current operating companies. Another opportunity to open more Marvel hotels in China is in turning underutilized commercial buildings into hotels.
Pillsbury also compares the marvel brand to the Holiday Inn brand in the 1960s. All Marvel hotels plan to develop their own restaurant industry as well, as today there is a lack of freestanding restaurants with quality food in China. Marvel hotels plan to fill this gap.
