Shangri-La will open its second luxury hotel in Sri Lanka

News Sri Lanka has suddenly become one of the hottest destinations in the Southeast Asia, so no wonder why hoteliers are eager to add to their portfolios accommodations in this magnificent island. Several weeks ago Shangri-La made an announcement it would build a 500-key hotel in Sri Lanka. Now the company has revealed its plans concerning the building of the second property.

The 300-key resort won’t be built in the island’s capital like the first property. This hotel in Hambantota will be located on 100 acres of land in the southern part of Sri Lanka. The resort is scheduled for opening in 2013, while the abovementioned 500-key hotel in Colombo will open its doors a year later.

According to Greg Dogan, the president and CEO of Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd, the company is very interested in launching its business in Sri Lanka. This island is known for its natural beauty, deep traditions of hospitality and rich culture.

Sri Lanka suffered from conflicts for three decades, making the island not very desirable destination for travellers. Currently the local government rebuilds the island’s economy and tries to position Sri Lanka as a popular leisure travel destination.

The costs for the building of the first hotel in Colombo estimate US $500 million. The building costs of the resort in Hambantota are unknown.
