According to a legend, one tooth survived during the cremation of Buddha. This tooth has become the main artifact of the temple. Every year thousands of pilgrims arrive at the temple to bow to the relic. The temple was severely damaged during the terror attacks in 1998, but it was quickly restored and continues being a unique Buddhist sanctuary. There is an elephant park near the city. It has quickly become very popular with tourists. The park was open in 1975 by the order of the Wild Nature Department. Initially, the park was a shelter for abandoned and unhealthy elephants. One can see here baby elephants, parents of which were killed by poachers, wounded and ill animals that get all the necessary care.
