Driving in Norway – Recommendations, Tips and Tricks

Previous tips
22. Numerous cameras and radars are installed literally everywhere. They accurately identify violators even in heavy traffic. According to the local regulations, it is prohibited to use all kinds of radar detectors. The violation of this rule will certainly result in a large fine.
23. Quite often, police officers patrol the roads using ordinary cars without any special markings. Local residents have even identified some typical characteristics of such patrols. Using these characteristics, it will be easier to define the police.
24. First of all, there are always two people in the car, and the passenger seats only in the front seat. Police officers use middle class cars to patrol the streets. The cost of their vehicles is neither cheap nor expensive. Finally, the police rarely use both old vehicles and news models.
25. A large fine (approximately US$130) is charged for talking on a cell phone while driving. You can only use the phone equipped with an additional “hands free” device.
26. Passing a red light will result in a fine of approximately US$400. The same fine is charged for overtaking when it is not permitted. When choosing a place to park, drivers should also be careful because the fine for parking in the wrong place is not less than US$80.
27. Drivers, who plan to travel in the country, should be wary of wild animals and livestock. They can walk on the road without any fear of cars passing by.

Hints on Car Hire in Norway

When choosing a car for your Norway trip, don’t forget to check and compare the franchise amount (indicated in the rental conditions) for all cars considered in your selection. The franchise may vary from 200 to 2000 euro/dollars even for cars of the same class. A thorough comparison will allow you to choose the option with the lowest franchise.

During your booking, we will offer you to take a full coverage of the franchise ('No Risk' or 'No Excess' package). If you book a car without full coverage, it is recommended to take it at the pick-up time - this will substantially reduce your financial liability in Norway for the whole rental period.

During your car pick-up in Norway, do not forget to check what to do in breakdown-, accident- or theft-cases. Most of our offers include 'Breakdown Assistance' package. Besides this, every rental office would be happy to assist you with this package.

Prior to the car return, please check your voucher for the fuel conditions. If it is indicated that a driver shall return the car with a full tank, do not forget to refuel it on the way back, this will save you from additional charges at the rental office.

If you are looking for a car hire in Norway, we advise you to check OrangeSmile.com actual rental offers. Just use the orange search form at the top. We guarantee that you would not be able to find better rates anywhere else!
28. The moose are certainly the most dangerous wild animals for drivers. Most often, they go out of the forest to the road at sunset and sunrise. Full moon is considered a period of a temporary increase in activity of the moose.
29. Public transport has the advantage on busy city roads, and school buses have a special priority. Do not try to overtake a bus, and if it has stopped to unload passengers, all the cars following it must also stop and wait until the road is free.
30. While driving, it is recommended to have the lower beams turned on regardless of the time of day and the type of road. Also, you should keep in mind that it is prohibited to use high beams on city roads. You can use them only on some suburban roads and motorways.
31. The highest permissible level of alcohol in blood is 0.2 ppm. Driving while intoxicated is considered a serious violation. To avoid all kinds of misunderstandings, you should not even seat in the driver’s place in a state of intoxication, especially when the car’s engine is running.
32. The police can stop virtually any vehicle to make a check. If the driver is offered to take a breath alcohol test, you should treat this request with patience and understanding. Anyway, a refusal to take the test will lead to a serious punishment. In addition to a heavy fine, your driving license will be cancelled.
33. When driving, the driver and all the passengers in the vehicle must fasten seat belts. Children with the height of 135 cm and shorter are allowed to be transported in a vehicle only in a special seat. You should also note that placing a child seat is allowed only in the back of the car.
34. There are convenient parking areas next to some streets. The only disadvantage of such parking lots is the limited time of use. If the vehicle must be left for more than three hours, it is recommended to leave it at the nearest public parking.
35. Savvy drivers should remember the general rule - the further from the city center car the parking lot is, the cheaper it costs. In suburban areas, there are even free parking lots. You can easily reach them from the city center by public transport.
36. Mountain roads remain one of the most difficult regions of the country. They are very narrow, and in some sections of the roads there is way for only one car. According to the local regulations, the car that goes down must always give way to the vehicle that goes up.
37. When the weather is bad, there are no special restrictions concerning the speed limit. Every driver should determine for himself the safe speed level. Local motorists are very neat and careful, so they slow down even during a light rain or snow.
38. It is prohibited to use sound signals in the city. Drivers are permitted to make a warning signal only if there is a serious risk of an accident. Otherwise, it will be considered a violation of the traffic rules.
39. Some road signs are valid only at a certain time or day of week, so make sure you read the additional information if there’s any. Thus, the symbol “8 – 16” means that the road sign is valid from 8:00 to 16:00 from Monday to Friday. If the characters are drawn in the parentheses, it is valid in Saturday as well, and if the marking is made in red, the sign is valid from Monday to Sunday.
40. Getting around on local roads is not difficult. All of them are distinguished by a huge number of informative and intuitive signs. All the major highways of the country are marked with the letter “E”. The quality of these roads is the best.
41. In winter, many mountain roads are closed. The period, during which it is prohibited to use the road, is different for different roads and is based on the weather conditions prevailing. In winter, even experienced drivers should not exceed the speed of 60 km/h, and the distance between vehicles must be longer than in a warm weather.
42. In winter, snow storms are not rare in Norway. During them, special snow removal equipment appears on the roads. Cars must move behind these snow removal machines, keeping the distance. During winter travels drivers are always recommended to carry a sufficient supply of water, food and warm clothes.
