Driving in Lithuania – Recommendations, Tips and Tricks
11. According to local regulations, motorists must keep lower beams turned on regardless of the time of day and weather conditions. The penalty for violating this rule is 50 litai.
12. Children under 12 years old with the height of less than 150 cm can be transported in a vehicle only if it has special restraint systems. The use of seat belts is mandatory not only for the driver but also for the passengers, including people traveling in the back seat of the car.
13. Drivers can use the cell phone while driving only if it is equipped with the «hands free» system. The fine for violation of this rule is quite high and can range from 100 to 300 litai.
Hints on Car Hire in Lithuania
When choosing a car for your Lithuania trip, don’t forget to check and compare the franchise amount (indicated in the rental conditions) for all cars considered in your selection. The franchise may vary from 200 to 2000 euro/dollars even for cars of the same class. A thorough comparison will allow you to choose the option with the lowest franchise.

15. Speeding still remains the most common violation in Lithuania. It should be remembered that quite often police officers use ordinary cars to patrol the country's roads. The number of radar detectors also increases every year. As a rule, the presence of the devices is marked with appropriate signs.
16. Local petrol stations usually sell diesel fuel and unleaded gasoline (95 and 98; RON 92 petrol is quite rare in Lithuania). There are also gas filling stations in the country. Drivers are allowed to carry up to 10 liters of petrol in cans.
17. Cars must be equipped with a fire extinguisher, a warning triangle, a first aid kit and a reflective vest. In case of a sudden breakdown on a highway it is allowed to leave the car only wearing the vest. Therefore, the vest should be stored in the cabin, and not in the trunk.
19. Standard police checks are usual in Lithuania. During such checks police officers may ask to see the mandatory equipment and examine the vehicle. Any use and transportation of radar detectors is prohibited. If the prohibited device is found during the inspection, the driver will be fined 300 - 500 litai, and the device will be confiscated.
20. In the city, public transport always has the advantage. Don’t forget to give way to trams and buses. You should also not overtake them, especially when they stop to load and unload passengers.
