Of interest to tourists is another historical monument - the Castle Of Naxos located near the Archaeological Museum. The building was erected by decree of Marco Sanunto, a Venetian who captured the 17 Cyclades islands and placed the ducal residence here. Materials left over from the ruins of the former acropolis were used during its construction (in the past, it was destroyed by pirates). The castle complex includes the central square with the Catholic Church, the ruins of the central tower, schools, as well as mansions.
Naxos Chora from Temple of Appollo Not far from Bazeos Castle in the village of Sagri, one can find the Temple of Demeter - or rather, what is left of it. The building dates from 530-520 BC, and it is believed that this particular temple inspired architects who were engaged in the construction of the Parthenon. White marble columns and beautiful mosaics testify to the former greatness of the temple. Throughout the island, mainly in coastal cities, you can find Venetian Towers. The most remarkable are the ones located in the island's capital, as well as in the cities of Fragupolos and Stelida. The island's museums are equally noteworthy - Petalouda Art Gallery, museums of folk art and ethnography, which can be found in almost every large village.

Panagia Drosiani Church deserves the attention of every visitor to the island. It was built during the Byzantine reign on the island (4th-5th centuries BC). During the Frankish period, the building served as a treasury. In 1555, after the island's capture by the Turks, the building acquired the status of a Greek Orthodox Church. Most of the monastery was destroyed in later times, but large-scale excavations conducted in the 1970s helped to find out that the monastery was once located in this place. By the way, there are lots of legends associated with it, so fans of mystical stories will be thrilled for sure. It is certainly worth asking locals about the secrets surrounding the construction of the monastery.
Naxos One more must-visit religious monument is the Monastery Fotodoti located near the village of Filoti. This is another attraction reminiscent of the era of Byzantine rule on the island. Initially, the monastery was quite modest, but throughout the Byzantine period, towers and fortifications were added to it, which ultimately led to the building's transformation into a fortification. The exact history of its construction is still unknown so one can only guess about it (once again, just ask locals about everything you'd like to know). Later, in 1227, after the Venetians came to power, the building was used as a Benedictine monastery.
