One of the capital's most recognizable religious sights is the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century soon after the end of the Patriotic War of 1812. The construction of the temple lasted more than forty years. In the post-revolutionary period, the cathedral was completely destroyed, and it was decided to erect the Palace of Soviets on its site.
