Culture of Monastir. Places to visit - old town, temples, theaters, museums and palaces

Monastir is rich in historic and architectural landmarks. The fortification called the Ribat of Monastir is one of the main historical symbols of the city. Centuries ago, lots of fortresses were built by the coast, but the fortress located in Monastir is the one that remained in the best condition. Warrior monks, who protected the city from pirates and conquerors, once lived in the fortress. The historic construction made of stone is impressively majestic. It managed not to be destroyed during the centuries of its existence. Today, the fortress houses an interesting museum dedicated to different kinds of Islamic art. Here you can find works by famous Tunisian sculptors and artists. One of the museum halls is dedicated to religious traditions of the indigenous population. In the summer, the old fortress hosts interesting events, including the city’s largest music festival. One of tourists’ favourite entertainments is going to the top of the observation tower that has a gorgeous view of the coast.

A considerable part of historic monuments is concentrated in Medina, Monastir’s historic district. The Great Mosque, the main religious monument in Monastir, is situated here. It was built in the 11th century and has a fairly modest appearance. The mosque has gone through two large reconstructions over the time of its existence. Only Muslims can check out the interior of the mosque. Adherents of other religions are not allowed inside.
Near the mosque, there’s Musée du Costume Traditionnel, a museum dedicated to customs and traditions of the indigenous population. It exhibits old household items, historical costumes, antique furniture, and pieces of art. Mannequins in old wedding costumes are among the most interesting exhibits. The museum displays an interesting collection of pottery and ceramics as well as the best works by local tinsmiths and goldsmiths. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

The largest and most colourful market in the city is situated in the historic district. Here you can find souvenir and craft stalls as well as the city’s best traditional cuisine restaurants. The historic district is surrounded by a fortification wall with five gates, which are also considered very important landmarks today. Tourists can climb some parts of the wall and enjoy a wonderful view of the city.
Mausolée du Président Habib Bourguiba is a very important national symbol for local people. The mausoleum was erected in honour of the first president of Tunisia. The mausoleum is of great architectural value. It was built using the best practices of Arab and Muslim architecture. Besides the vault of the president and his family members, the mausoleum also houses a small museum. Its main exhibits include the president’s personal stuff, including the furniture from his former office and the traditional costumes that the president wore on special occasions.
Monastir can boast not only historic but also natural landmarks. Unique salt lakes are situated in the vicinity of the city. They are the largest lakes of this kind in the world—the total area is 7,000 square metres. Throughout most of the year, the lakes don’t contain water, as it completely evaporates in a hot climate. In the process of evaporation, incredibly beautiful crystal residue forms on the bottom of the salt lakes. Curious tourists come here every day to admire them. The lakes look just incredible against a background of surrounding sandy landscapes. At certain times of the year, the lakes contain a maximum amount of water, which has high concentrations of salt. Near the lakes, there are a few craft stalls where local citizens sell interesting souvenirs made of salt crystals.
Mosque If you think there’s not enough historic landmarks in the city, you can go on a tour to Skanes, a resort located nearby. Most historic buildings house restaurants and craftsmen’s shops today. The city has a beautiful mosque, which managed to remain intact, and a large market, which travellers go to in search of interesting souvenirs.
