In its new study, SiteMinder, a popular platform for hospitality professionals, asked residents of Spain about their travel preferences after the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 570 Spaniards participated in the survey and gave their opinion on the travel plans. It looks like people do not want to stay at home during their vacations. More than 90% of respondents answered that they are going to travel before the end of 2021. Almost one-half of all participants say that they plan to take a vacation in the next three months.
What destinations do Spaniards plan to travel to for their next vacation? It looks like hotels in Madrid, Barcelona and other cities in the country will have bigger bookings in the future since locals prefer not to go abroad. This is good news for Spain because the country greatly depends on tourism. Spain’s GDP has been historically dependent on the travel industry that generates one eight of the country’s GDP every year.
SiteMinder underlines that the results of this survey are very encouraging for travel-related businesses because tourism is one of the most affected industries that suffered great damages because of the pandemic. Spanish people showed their patriotic side this time. It is already clear for hotels that their earnings will be modest this year. Tourists from the previous major source markets for Spain such as Germany and the UK are likely to visit it less frequently. Despite this, the country’s residents are eager to help local businesses and everyone working in the hospitality industry.
How did COVID-19 shape preferences of modern travelers? It is not hard to forecast a shift in preferences. Indeed, more and more tourists seek hotels that new hygiene standards and frequent disinfection are still essential nowadays. One more major change tourists do not want to make long-term bookings and prefer to order a hotel room closer to their departure date.
A surprisingly high number of respondents - 74% - say that they are going to make a hotel booking when there is only one month or less left before the vacation. Moreover, while 90% of respondents plan to travel soon, as many as 82% of them do not have any booing. Experts suggest that there will be a significant boost in hotel bookings this and next month.
