2019 was a Record Year for Marriott Hotels

News Marriott International had an exceptionally successful year in 2019. It managed to sign a record number of rooms, and so its pipeline increased to roughly 515,000 in December 2019. This is the best result of the famous hotel company on record.

Last year, Marriott signed 815 contracts regarding new hotels with over 136,000 rooms in total. The company was growing in different regions around the world. Moreover, Marriott added as many as 516 hotels in 60 different countries during 2019. These hotels added another 78,000 rooms to the hotelier’s portfolio. This is truly unprecedented speed – on average, Marriott opened one new hotel every 17 hours last year.

This is definitely a success for the famous hotelier. Marriott names several reasons for such an achievement. The company has a range of popular brands suitable for different hotels, both new and converted, and offers business support and access to its loyalty program. In December 2019, Marriott International was present in 134 countries and territories where it had over 7,300 hotels with approximately 1.38 million rooms.

An interesting fact: Marriott is now focused on new hotels outside North America. Actually, more than half of the company’s pipeline is located outside this region. The Asia Pacific had the biggest number of signed hotels in 2019 (38,000 rooms in total), followed by Europe with 17,000 rooms. More than 9,000 rooms were signed for the Caribbean and Latin America, and 8,000 rooms – for the Middle East and Africa. In 2019, the company also debuted in new countries. Marriott added hotels in Cyprus, Latvia, Kyrgyzstan, and Moldova hotels.

Marriott was also opening more hotels than usual in the luxury segment in 2019. The hotelier signed 42 new contracts regarding the opening of new luxury hotels in 27 countries. It also opened 34 new luxury hotels around the world. The most notable of them are the W hotel in Dubai – The Palm, St. Regis hotel in Venice, and the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Pune. Marriott also plans to make its W hotel brand more luxurious. The company bought a hotel on Union Square in New York and plans to use it as a showcase property of the renewed brand. Another important change in the business of Marriott – the hotelier decided to step into the all-inclusive business. Soon after the launch of the new all-inclusive hotel platform, Marriott signed the first seven agreements for all-inclusive hotels. An 800-room hotel in Jamaica and a 240-room hotel in Mexico are some of the most anticipated all-inclusive hotels by Marriott.
