The Balearic Islands are a well-known and established tourist destination. Every year, hotels in Mallorca, Formentera, and Menorca greet numerous guests who come to enjoy quality beach recreation and fantastic nightlife that the islands can offer. Recently, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Impulsa Balears Foundation has decided to join their forces and steadily adapt the islands to the objectives of the 2030 Agenda. The Balearic Islands will become the first tourism destination that is developed in accordance with this document.
The main aim of this project is to reshape tourism to the islands strategically and promote sustainable development in the region. In order to make this possible, it was decided to collaborate with local communities and regional actors to promote tourism as a booster of sustainable development. It was also decided to develop special economy guidelines for hotels on the Balearic Islands that will help them to identify the best practices for their business. This is very important because hotels need to work in a way that doesn’t have a crucial negative impact on the surrounding environment. Responsible consumption and production are particularly important for the Balearic Islands because of the popularity of this tourist destination.
Meanwhile, the popularity of Mallorca hotels is only growing, and this happens not only because of leisure tourists but also because of business travelers as well. At the beginning of 2019, Palma Convention Centre, which is managed by Melia Hotels, published its first full year activity report. The venue was opened in April 2017. In 2018, the Convention Centre hosted 226 events that attracted almost 77 thousand visitors and allowed to generate revenue of 15.3 million euro. This is higher than the initial expectation.
The popular Spanish island attracted both Spanish and international events. Moreover, Mallorca hotels enjoyed more than 50,000 overnight stays that were made by business travelers as a part of their participation in the events in the Convention Centre in 2018. For example, corporate events by Panasonic and Jaguar drew 7,000 visitors to the island. A similar number of guests visited an important Spanish medical congress.
Business travel has one advantage it is not dependent on high/low season. While leisure travelers mostly visit the islands on a certain time of the year, business guests help reducing travel seasonality and offer greater diversification.
