The Most Visited Cities in 2018 are Revealed

News Euromonitor International, a company specializing in market research, published its annual report dedicated to the most visited cities in the world. The Top 100 City Destinations 2018 is estimation for this year that is based on results of 2017. Just like a year ago, Asia continues dominating heavily in the list.

Actually, 6 out of 10 most visited cities in 2018 are located in Asia, and the two leaders of 2017 retained their positions for this year. Without a doubt, Hong Kong hotels will not experience problems with occupation any time soon as this is the most visited city in the world. Bangkok is on the second place. Among other top performers in Asia, there are Singapore (top 4), Macau (top 5), Kuala Lumpur (top 9), and Shenzhen (top 10). London hotels have once again proven their popularity as the capital of the UK scored third in the list. By far, this is the most popular destination in Europe. The popularity of London keeps growing, and the British capital added 4% in the number of international arrivals in 2016-2017.

There are several European cities in the list of the top destinations. These are Paris, Rome, Istanbul, Antalya, Amsterdam, Vienna, Prague, Barcelona, and Milan. According to experts, London might face some challenges after Brexit. The city is famous for its sharing economy, but will it be able to perform just as strong when the UK leaves the EU? Last year, in March 2017, London and Paris announced a business scheme to promote tourism and investments between the two legendary European capitals.

This year, Portugal appeared in the list not with one but with two cities for the first time. Porto greeted 2.2 million guests in 2017, so it debuted in the top 100 ranking. The city was ranked the 96th. That is significantly higher than before as Porto managed to move 42 places up in 2012-2017. The country’s capital, Lisbon, is also present in the ranking.

Turkish cities also perform strongly. Istanbul hotels post really good results, and there is nothing strange in that as the city is the 3rd most visited in Europe and the 12th in the world. With 10.7 million visitors, Antalya was placed 14th in the top 100 ranking. It is also important to mention Paris. The city lost two positions in 2016 because of terrorist attacks. However, Paris welcomed 16.8 million tourists in 2017, and that helped the city climb up to become the 6th most visited city in the world, overcoming Dubai. Another popular French city, Nice, is likely to lose 7 positions this year.
