The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has revealed the traditional Cities Report dedicated to the best-performing tourism cities in the world. The document was published during the WTTC Asia Leaders Forum that took place in Macau. The report throws the light upon the 72 most important tourist cities in the world. Together, these cities had a share of 24.3% of the global Travel and Tourism GDP and generated as much as US$625 billion.
Hotels in Shanghai, as well as Beijing and Paris hotels, will unlikely suffer from the lack of visitors in the nearest future as these three cities have the largest tourism market size in the world with the GDP of US$35bn, US$32.5bn, and US$28bn respectively. They are followed by Orlando and New York ($24.8bn both), Tokyo ($21.7bn), Bangkok ($21.3bn), Mexico City ($19.7bn), Las Vegas and Shenzhen ($19.5bn and $19bn respectively).
WTTC made the ranks of best performing cities in accordance with three categories: tourism market size, the share of the city tourism in the total GDP of that city, and share of the city’s tourism GDP in the tourism GDP of the country. In accordance with the second category, the top ten cities are the following: Cancun, Marrakech, Macau SAR, Orlando, Antalya, Dubrovnik, Las Vegas, Venice, Dubai, and Bangkok. The top ten cities in the third category are Macau SAR, Hong Kong SAR, Singapore, Budapest, Dublin, Dubai, Lima, Buenos Aires, Prague, and Santiago.
It is not a secret that tourism is also good as a source of new jobs. Different tourist related facilities and hotels in Jakarta, Beijing, and Mexico City really help local economies as these are the top three cities in terms of creation of new jobs. They are followed by Shanghai, Bangkok, Chongqing, Delhi, Mumbai, Ho Chi Minh City, and Shenzhen.
Finally, the report also includes some interesting information. For example, Cairo had the fastest Travel & Tourism GDP Contribution growth last year (34.4%). Macau was the second with the growth of 14.2%. In general, China has the majority of the fastest growing cities in this category over the last five years, namely, Chongqing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu. Such cities as Bangkok, Paris, Mexico City, and Tokyo have the highest contribution to Travel & Tourism GDP of their countries. In terms of spending of domestic and international travelers, New York has the best balance of 52.7% vs. 47.2%. Not all gateway cities have this excellent share. For example, Paris greatly depends on international spenders while Beijing mostly relies on domestic travelers.
