Vietnam Works to Improve Its Tour Guides

News Vietnam has been an emerging destination in latest years. More and more travelers from all over the world want to see the inimitable beauty of the country, explore its gorgeous resorts, and get acquainted with its rich heritage. These days, not only hotels in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City hotels enjoy more customers. Numerous resorts and tourist destinations continuously greet more guests. Naturally, this increased number of foreign guests requires more tour guides who can tell tourists a lot about the history and culture of the country.

In order to make local tour guides more competent, the Vietnam Tourism Association (VTA) announced a new ranking system for its guides. In accordance with this system, all guides will get a rank that depends on their performance. VTA also wants to encourage tour guides to perform better and meet raising requirements of travelers from different parts of the world.

In line with the first stage of the new initiative, Association of Vietnamese Tour Guides, which is a part of VTA, will conduct a series of events this month. These activities will take place in such famous Vietnam’s cities as Ho Chi Minh City, Quang Ninh, Hanoi, Lao Cai, and Khanh Hoa. During these activities, tour guides will also get ranked.

Tour guides’ ranks will depend on the three main criteria, namely, knowledge and skills, capacity, and favorable conditions for both employees and travel firms. All tour guides will obtain classification that can vary from three to five stars. VTA believes that will help to enhance the quality of tourism in Vietnam. Initially, all members of the Association of Vietnamese Tour Guides will be obliged to apply for the new program and obtain their rank. Later, when all criteria and regulations are finally fixed, all tour guides from different countries of the world will be allowed to apply.

Currently, there are 23,055 registered tour guides in Vietnam. This includes 8,412 domestic tour guides, 14,428 international tour guides, and 215 tour guides who only work at specified landmarks. That said, only 5% of domestic tour guides work under contracts, get paid officially, and have social insurance. The majority of tour guides are not registered anywhere, so it will really take much effort for the country’s government to make the majority of its tour guides official. The new ranking system is financially sponsored by the European Union.
