Thai Hotel Plans to a Become Single-Use Plastic Free Venue

These days, more and more companies understand how harmful plastic is for the environment. That is particularly true about single-use plastic and plastic packaging that millions of people throw every day. The Akaryn Hotel Group has decided to get rid of all single-use plastic items in its hotels by 2020. In May 2018, Akaryn opens a new hotel in Sukhumvit, Bangkok, which will become the pilot property in the initiative.

On the first stage of the new program, the hotel company started sourcing containers and bottles made of glass so that restaurants and bars at the new hotel do not need any single-use plastic. Guests of the hotel also do not need to use, for example, water in plastic bottles as Akyra offers stylish stainless steel bottles instead. Guests will find them in their rooms. These multi-use steel bottles can be refilled easily at any time of their stay.

Every floor of the new hotel will have special self-service dispensers where all guests can easily refill their bottles. Clients of Akyra Sukhumvit are also encouraged to take these bottles with them to shopping tours or sightseeing. Bath amenities will also have a special packaging – celadon pottery. These are special locally produced containers filled with products infused with essential oils. All bin bags in rooms are biodegradable as well. There will also be even eco-friendly shopping bags – the hotelier tries to encourage tourists not to buy or accept plastic bags in Bangkok shops.

The problem of plastic is real, and it is dangerous for our environment. Every year, more than 8 million tons of plastic are thrown away. Nowadays, the size of the “seventh continent” in the Pacific Ocean, an island formed by waste, is more than 3.4 million square meters. Finally, more businesses and ordinary people understand the danger of plastic.
