InterContinental Group (IHG) has unveiled the opening of its 200th hotel in China the InterContinental Shanghai Ruijin. Despite such a huge portfolio in the country, this hotel is truly special because this is the first heritage hotel by IHG in Asia (and the sixth one globally).
IHG will be traditionally only a managing organization for this property as the owner of the InterContinental Shanghai Ruijin is Shanghai Donghu Group Corporation. Originally, the building of the hotel was a family estate of Benjamin Morris (built in 1917). The building consists of four houses, several service buildings and a large garden, that is stretched on more than 40 hectares. Previously, the house was used as the State Guest House of Shanghai and later it was turned into the headquarters of the Communist Party. The building’s style and design were severely damaged, and it took IHG several years to get back the neoclassical look to the hotel.
Currently, InterContinental Shanghai Ruijin features 238 guestrooms and suites. The hotel also offers garden villas made in the British style. The hotel’s suites are equipped with beautiful mahogany furniture and other antique items that create the atmosphere of old Shanghai, such as old phonographs. There is also the Club InterContinental Wing in the territory of the hotel. Here guests can stay in one of spacious 80 guestrooms, 36 of which are equipped with a balcony or a patio. There are also 10 suites in the wing. All guests of that wing are welcome in the Club Lounge, where they can enjoy their breakfasts or visit a library.
The hotel’s dining facilities are represented by La Rue French Brasserie, a bistro type restaurant that mostly serves French cuisine. The other restaurant is Xin Yuan Lou that serves contemporary Chinese cuisine and is located in an antique villa in the garden. The hotel also features a fitness centre, a spa, an indoor pool, and a business centre.
