Hospitality consulting firm C9 Hotelwords has issued a new report according to which hotel industry of Phuket is blooming thanks to the increase of the number of airport arrivals. The growth of tourists who arrived in Phuket by this means of transport was 11% and estimated 2.32 million passengers.
The main growing source markets are China, Eastern Europe and Malaysia. The growth of visitors from these countries estimated 66%, 33% and 17% respectively comparing to the same period of 2011.
The increased number of tourists is the result of new airlifts from Mainland China and Russia, as well as of new low-cost flights offered from the region. As a result, more tourists come to the island and the hotel sector of the region benefits a lot from this increase.
Without a doubt, such a growth of the number of international flights couldn’t have failed to reflect on occupancy rates of local hotels. C9 Hotelworks mentions the average occupancy of 75% for the first six months of 2012. RevPAR added 8%.
The forecasted transaction levels for hotels in Phuket are to reach US$315 million in 2012. The hotel industry of the region has very good prospects according to experts as by 2015 5,080 new guestrooms will be added to hotel supply and this will increase the hotel inventory by 11%. However, there are some obstacles that may prevent Phuket accommodations from smooth development. The first reason is the lack of clear long-stay tourism plans. The second reason is more serious. Currently Phuket International Airport undergoes a series of restoration works that are to be completed in 2015. However, if the hotel industry of the island keeps adding 5% annually, the expanded airport will reach its capacity by the end of 2017.
