According to luxury travel network Virtuoso sustainable tourism becomes one of new key trends and more travellers are interested in it. This information was announced during Virtuoso Travel Week.
As one of the examples of sustainable tourism Virtuoso mentioned the Kingdom of Bhutan. Visitors of the country pay a royalty of US$65 per day, and this money is used to fight with poverty, subsidize education and improve the quality of healthcare for local residents.
Currently there are many places that require help and attention, and tourists could be that moving force that could improve the situation. Virtuoso also mentioned Mexico that started attracting more upscale travellers. The network counted the growth of 133% in the number of tourists from 2008 to 2011.
Today many travellers want to have access to unique cultures and nature, such as the Galapagos Islands or the lands along the Amazon. Some countries even start special programs to attract the public eye to the problems of preserving nature and helping indigenous people.
River cruises are another trend that doesn’t lose its popularity according to Virtuoso. The growth of this kind of rest estimated 10% in 2011. Approximately 400,000 passengers made river cruises last year.
