The Dubai-based company Istithmar World has revealed its plans concerning the conversion of the famous ocean liner the Queen Elizabeth 2 into a luxury hotel. The new accommodation will have 300 guestrooms and will be stationed at Port Rashid.
This is not the first attempt to turn the renowned ship into a hotel. In 2007 the ship was bought by a state owned company from its owner Carnival Corp. The sum of the deal estimated US$100 million and the ship was to undergo a conversion. The conversion to a hotel should have lasted 10 months after which the Queen Elizabeth 2 should have been docked at the base of Palm Jumeirah. However, due to financial instability these plans were postponed and later skipped.
This time Istishmar World seems to be very serious and so the Queen Elizabeth may enter the docks of Dubai never to leave them. A part of the ship will be turned to a hotel, and another part will be used to store the exhibition of Dubai’s natural history museum. The total cost of the project is not revealed by Istithmar as well as the funding source for this definitely not cheap project.
