Recently Londonderry has been chosen the UK’s City of Culture of 2013, so here will be opened several accommodations to cope with possible influx of tourists.
Two accommodations may be opened in the Waterside area of this city. One more hotel may occupy the building of the Tillie and Henderson shirt factory that is now closed. Currently only one site is known for sure – a 114-key hotel in Londonderry on the Strand Road. Other three properties may be located in Foyle Street, Gransha and Great James Street.
According to SDLP councilor Gerard Diver there is a lack of guestrooms in the city, so new hotels have to be built to provide visitors of Londonderry with choice. The building of hotels is also good for the future of this place.
It has been revealed the local government will carefully examine all applications and approve 6 submissions. According to Maeve McLaughlin, the councilor of Sinn Fein, they will take into consideration strategic approach to development of the new properties. This includes roads, available parking, and access to other facilities.
The City of Culture is the title that is aimed to increase attention to the selected place and boost its economy and tourism. No government funding is provided to the City of Culture.
