Hotels in Helsinki show a 9% increase comparing to the previous year

News According to forecasts of experts, this year is going to become the most successful for tourism in Helsinki in its history, exceeding the result of 2008. The total number of overnight stays has increased to 9% from January to September comparing to the previous year. Overall the increase estimates 3% across the whole country.

Domestic market plays the main role in this success. Finnish tourists have become more active this year, making 15% more overnight stays in Helsinki. Foreign tourists stayed in the capital of Finland 5% more than in 2008.

According to statistics, hotels in Helsinki are most frequently visited by foreign guests from Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the United States and Japan. The most sufficient increase show the tourists from Sweden – 15%. The number of tourists from other countries has also increased. The US and Japan show a 10% increase, Russia – 8% and the UK – plus 4%. German tourists, however, visited Helsinki less than in 2009, causing a 6% decrease.

This country becomes a popular destination for tourists from Norway. Due to the launching of budget airplane flights between the capitals of both countries, the Norwegians become more interested in visiting Finland and staying in Helsinki hotels. Norwegian airlines also offer cheap flights from Helsinki to Stockholm, causing the abovementioned increase of Swedish tourists. Finally, in 2010 Finland was visited by the record number of tourists from Estonia.

Helsinki is a traditional destination for visitors from Russia and Japan. As EuropeanCities Marketing mentions, this city continues being the most popular destination for the Russians, who visit it more frequently than other European capitals like Prague, Vienna or Rome. In Japan Finland is traditionally the most popular country in the Northern Europe.
