Following Sympozjum hotel in Krakow, Hilton Hotel & Convention Centre has taken away one star from its rating.
This decision had been made by the hotel in Warsaw CEO and was already approved by the local government. Hilton’s management doesn’t comment this step, but journalists from Gazeta Prawna assume the reason is in the high competition on the 5-star hotel market. Currently luxury segment hotels cannot bring stable profit for their owners, so hoteliers have to think of new “tricks” to attract more customers. Nowadays there are over 40 5-star hotels in Poland. The majority of them are located in Warsaw, where travelers can choose from 9 upscale hotels, and in Krakow that overcomes even the capital of this country with its 10 5-star hotels.
The main reason for decrease in the number of tourists in 5-star hotels is, certainly, in economic crisis. Luxury segment is traditionally occupied by business travelers and due to recession more and more businessmen prefer to save on hotels and select cheaper variants for their trips.
The management of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, that has in its portfolio such popular hotel brands as Westin and Sheraton, has also mentioned the possibility of decreasing the number of stars in rating. However, this decision wasn’t been taken to action.
