After a summer lull, the hotels of Europe are again disappointing their guests with a sharp rise in prices.
While in a number of major cities the price rise is explainable (the festivals and other events always attracting a lot of tourists), in other European metropolises hotel prices have increased for no apparent reason.
According to the Trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI), an average double room in major European cities in September will cost 114 euros, which is 8% higher than in the previous month.
The largest price increases from September to August 2010 are to be found in hotels in Venice (34%), which hosts the International Film Festival, in Milan, preparing for the Fashion Week, and in the capital city of Italy, Rome (27%).
However, despite the fact that hotel accommodation has now become less affordable, the prices in European hotels are so far slightly below the level of May. According to Trivago, Geneva ( €195) as well as Venice (€191) and Paris (€162) remain the most expensive European cities. The hotels in London and Amsterdam, on the other hand, have become a bit more attractive for tourists compared with August, by dropping their prices by 5 and 2%. The cheapest hotel rooms are in the capitals of Eastern Europe, especially in Sofia and Bucharest (€76 per night).
