Groningen is an ancient city with fascinating history. Its rapid development was in the first half of the 17th century, when a university was founded there. The university works even nowadays, so the city is home to quite a large number of students. The central district is considered the liveliest part of the city. Here you will find numerous entertainment venues, shops and restaurants around historic squares and buildings. Pedestrian zones are the areas near such squares as Grote Markt, Poelestraat, Vismarkt and Peperstraat. These squares are always crowded, even late at night.

The city will be surely loved by fans of walking. Stadspark remains one of the main attractions of the city. The park is very popular among both local residents and visitors. There are also several unique architectural landmarks in the city, the most famous of which are St Martin Cathedral (Martinikerk) and Martini Tower located next to it.

Museum Groninger is one of the most noteworthy cultural institutions of Groningen. The museum is located near the railway station. Its three spacious halls exhibit a rich collection of paintings. The age of some of the pictures is more than two hundred years. Niemeijer Tobacco Museum is a very unusual place, and guests will see an interesting collection of marine artifacts in Northern Maritime Museum.

The Museum of Groningen University is one of the most symbolic establishments of the city. Not far from Groningen is located another interesting town called Lauwersmeer, which is also distinguished by a rich choice of attractions.
