Harsh Alaska is home to a fascinating reserve. Wrangell-St. Ellias National Park is located here. Established in 1980, it covers an area of more than 53320 square kilometres. The most remarkable attraction in the reserve is St. Elias Mount. Fabulously beautiful park with an abundance of snow covered mountain ranges and vast plains attract a huge number of travellers. Over 60000 tourists visit the park annually since 2007.
There are several paved roads in the park which makes walks more comfortable. There are also special camping areas where you can stay for a few days. The glaciers, which are more than 150 in number, are of great interest. The Malaspin glacier is the largest one, it is even larger than the state of Rhode Island.
It’s really hard to imagine that just a century ago the National Park was bustling with life. Gold and copper were extracted from the area. Now, evidence of earlier mining includes ghost towns which are quite interesting for visits. The most favourable time to visit Wrangell-St. Ellias park is the period from mid-May to early October. Many campings and summer hotels work in the territory of the reserve at this time of the year. Fans of ski mountaineering prefer to come here in March and April.
