The Church of Saint Nicholas in Khamovniki built in 1682 is a wonderful example of Orthodox architecture. The building impresses visitors with its richly decorated facade that immediately catches the eye. By the way, Leo Tolstoy, a classic Russian writer, the author of the immortal novel War and Peace, was one of the parishioners and often mentioned the church in his works. Besides Orthodox churches, the capital of Russia also houses temples of other denominations—for example, Moscow Cathedral Mosque and the Moscow Choral Synagogue that are remarkable landmarks as well.

Moscow is a modern city, so it surely couldn’t dispense with modern constructions. The Moscow International Business Center with its skyscrapers has become the city’s symbol, while some of its buildings are the tallest in whole Europe (the Federation Tower, the City of Capitals). If you want to get the best view of the business center, you should go to Sparrow Hills. In 1957, the majestic Hotel Ukraina, one of the most remarkable buildings in the capital of Russia, was built. Today, it’s called the Radisson Royal Hotel (renamed in 2010). The building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs designed by architects Gelfreykh and Minkus and built in 1953 is a great monument of Stalinist Empire style. It’s remarkable because it’s the only Soviet building without a star and a spire, which were distinctive features of the style.
